The Courts of Common Pleas are Pennsylvania’s general trial courts. These courts have been in place since the Commonwealth’s colonial charter in 1776.

Delaware County criminal cases begin in the Magisterial District Courts. The next step in the court system for misdemeanor and felony cases is the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.

The Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County, the 32nd Judicial District of Pennsylvania, hears all of the county’s major civil and criminal trials as well as family and probate matters.

The court is located in Media and meets in a Classic Revival style courthouse built in 1913.

The Court supervises all adult probation, juvenile probation (including the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center) and domestic relations services.

The Court also provides administrative support to the 33 Magisterial District Courts in Delaware County.

The Delaware County Court system covers 14 departments and has a budget of about $46 million dollars.

The Court of Common Pleas is overseen by a President Judge who supervises the entire court. President Judge Kevin F. Kelly, is the president judge of the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.

Court Administrator

The Court Administrator oversees the administration of the Court’s criminal, civil, municipal law and family law sections. The Court Administrator is also responsible for day-to-day operations of the one day/one trial jury system and the arbitration program. Gerald C. Montella is the Delaware County Court Administrator.

Courtroom Locations

Most criminal cases are heard in the courtrooms on the courthouse’s second floor.
